"Translational Medicine" and “Personalized Medication” Seminars were held in academic meeting room in Yanda International Medical Research Institute on October 29th, 2010. The dean of Yanda Medical Institute, Zhang Wei Wei, hosted the seminars. The Chief Scientist of American Konodi Pharmaceutical Company, Professor Rowan, the Project Manager of American NIH in China, Dr. Shi Zhan Xiang, the President of Hua Yuan Bei Yao Group, Mr.Luan, and several experts as Mr. Gu, attended the seminars. Meanwhile, the Director of Gastroenterology Department of Yanda International Hospital, Yuan Nong, the Director of General Surgery Department, Wang Tian Zhi, the Director of Hematology Department, Hou Xiang Lin, the Director of ENT department, Wang Ding, the Director of Cardiovascular Department, Jiang Bin, and over 10 other department directors attended the meeting together.

First, Dean of Yanda Medical Research Institute, Zhang Wei Wei, introduced organizational structure, scientific research strength and scientific conditions to all guests and participants in details. He pointed out that Yanda Medical Research Institute shall be the engine of "Translation Medicine" by taking experimental and scientific research achievements into clinical application and use at the fastest speed to bring social and economic benefits. Mr. Zhang also mentioned Yanda Medical Research Institute is the international and open research institute that welcomes all people with lofty ideals in scientific research projects, technical services, and investments for extensive cooperation.

Later on, Dr. Rowan gave keynote speech in "R&D Platform and Technology of Personalized Medicine ". Dr. Rowan pointed out that personalized medicine plays a great role in today’s medical field in order to bring much better service based on his clinical drug used data analysis. Dr. Rowan mentioned the drug therapy in clinical must solve two major issues on "safety" and "effectiveness". The same drug using in different individuals may result in very different effects. Some people may even have sorts of adverse reactions or side effects leading to death. The human genome project (HGP) studies show that these differences are due to drug-related genetic variations because SNPS changed individuals’ metabolism of drugs and the characteristics of receptor protein which cause different effects thereafter. It has vital significant meaning to all clinical doctors in Personalized Medication. Dr. Rowan said, apart from the factors of drugs and the patient's genders and ages or the interactions with other diseases and living environment, patients’ own genetic factors in drug reactions actually play an extremely important role among those factors. Dr. Rowan’s brilliant and interesting speech was interrupted by enthusiastic applause several times. His sharing brought significant impact and further thinking to us especially in Personalized Medication field.

Finally Dr. Shi, the representative of Global MD organization in China and the Project Manager of NIH Clinical Training and Research in China, gave deep analysis on the subject of "Promotion and Thinking of NIH for Translational Medicine". He personally participated in the establishment ceremony of the Concorde Transformation Medical Center, Shanghai Transformation Medical Center, and the US Transformation Medical Center. Dr. Shi mentioned that the transformation of medicine is a newly concept over nearly 2 to 3 years and its purpose is to break the barriers between medical and pharmaceutical development, to establish direct association from the lab to ward with fast acquired research knowledge and achievements for applied clinical use. The value of Translational Medicine has caught high attention by US and European countries to start strategic actions. The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) recognizes that creating opportunities to facilitate new clinical and translational scientific development is necessary for the 21st century through establishing discipline constructions. Dr. Shi gave inputs in having “Translational Medicine” industrialized and pointed out three key directions: development of new culture and new method for applications, cultivation of professional human resources, and integration of entrepreneurial model with management research resources.

The seminars of Translational Medicine and Individualized Medication promoted academic development of Yanda International Health City, and laid solid foundation for International Translational Medicine Seminar in early December of 2010.
